EVENT SUMMARY
The AJMC® annual PCOC conference unites leaders in oncology and value-based care, offering valuable insights into the dynamic, rapidly changing oncology care landscape. Our theme, “Innovations in Cancer Care: Tales from the Front Line,” was carried out from our keynote speaker, Matthew Zachary, to the panels from The US Oncology Network, OneOncology, American Oncology Network, and Florida Cancer Specialists & Research Institute (FCS). Providers shared how they bring value to practices and patients. Emily Touloukian, DO, of Coastal Cancer Center, noted how joining OneOncology in 2023 offered protection to her practice during the Change Healthcare cyberattack. In a discussion that took on greater meaning in the weeks after PCOC, FCS’ Chris Elder, PharmD, BCOP, shared how members of his pharmacy team have developed hurricane preparation protocols to prevent loss of expensive cancer drugs. For more coverage of PCOC 2024, see our special recap issue, which will be released in December.

Fertility Preservation Advocacy Challenges

Matthew Zachary said an achievement of the Gen X movement, Stupid Cancer, is to push for adolescents and young adults to preserve their ability to become parents years after cancer treatment ends. However, only 18 states cover fertility preservation.

Expanding Roles for Pharmacists

PCOC’s first all-pharmacy panel offered insights on how much more these professionals could bring to care delivery with full provider status. Automation and AI could eliminate repetitive tasks to allow pharmacists to fill critical gaps amid the oncologist shortage.

Navigating CMS Billing Codes

PCOC isn’t afraid to get into the weeds. Thyme Care’s Lalan Wilfong, MD, led a detailed discussion on how CMS’ new patient navigation codes interface with other billing codes alongside the Enhancing Oncology Model (EOM); other codes include Chronic Care Management and Principal Care Management. Panelists shared how they hoped CMS would do more to allow telehealth to mesh with these codes after the experience in the pandemic.

Inflation Reduction Act Impact

A panel featuring pharma industry insiders illuminated the effects of the Inflation Reduction Act. If drugs are added to the Medicare Fair Price negotiations, sponsors are unlikely to seek indications for small populations going forward, and instead will wait to seek all indications at once.

IRA's Effect on EOM Costs

The IRA will intersect with the EOM for providers, because when patients reach the catastrophic phase, Medicare’s share of total cost of care will shift from 80% to 20% on January 1, 2025, pulling down the average cost of Part D drugs; this will widen disparities in costs with infused drugs.

Precision Medicine and Sequencing

Davey Daniel, MD, chief medical officer for OneOncology, who took part in a fireside chat on precision medicine, said we’ve reached the “tipping point” for next-generation sequencing—where it is the standard of care. He implied we may reach that point for minimal residual disease testing with more real-world evidence.
